Peridot
The gemstone of the month for May is the Peridot. It is one of the few gemstones available in just one colour, a distinct and vibrant chartreuse green. Particularly cosmic, it is the first gemstone to be discovered on another planet, Mars, by NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor. In addition, it is the only other gemstone apart from diamonds to form below the earth's crust, rising to the surface when a surge of magma picks it up. Iconic throughout time, with Romans naming it “evening emerald” as the stone remains visible at night. Historians even believe many “emerald” treasures belonging to Cleopatra were in fact peridots!
